We, the undersigned, petition the Council to Reverse the Extended On Street Parking Charges, and Resume the 6am- 6pm tariff zone in the City Centre, and Halve the Price of Sunday Parking
More details from petitioner:
The Community in and around Chinatown and the City Centre area have felt the negative impact of the implementation of extended parking charges.

The Policy to extend the hours of chargeable on-street parking from to 6am to 8pm, and to eliminate free parking on Sunday’s was heavily opposed by local people and businesses at the time of the public proposal in early July 2011.

In spite of multiple petitions from businesses and residents the proposal was put through in October 2011.

The repercussions of the extended charges have been manifest on many levels.

In terms of business- more than 3 major restaurants have been forced to close down due to lack of attendance to the area since the parking alteration; Tai Wu being the most unexpected and well-respected of these recent casualties.

Testimonies of local residents include observations that Chinatown is ‘dying’; with the area being ‘recognizably quiet’ in the evenings after 6pm- which used to be a peak time for trade in the series of eateries which comprise much of the area.

Local elderly residents report increased isolation as their families no longer can afford to attend the Chinatown area to share a dinner in local eateries, due to the timing of the extended charges;

Sundays are traditionally a day for families to get together in Chinatown, but many working class pensioners and their relatives cannot afford the increasing parking fees and new Sunday charges.

The community in the Chinatown district, Manchester’s Gay Village and surrounding areas are requesting a reversion back to the 6am-6pm on street charges.

And for a half-price Sunday Parking policy, so that families and visitors to the area are not discouraged by the financial outlay of attending this district.
