虽然从6，7月份有一些公立Grammar School 明年的入学考试（所谓的11+考试）已经开始了，但大部分学校的考试都是集中到9月到12月这个考试季节，有孩子考试的父母肯定已经和孩子辛苦好几年了就等这最后一拼了，祝你们一切顺利！

没有孩子考试的这里讨论分享一下Grammar School的问题，所有信息都是我知道的公开的信息，如果有什么错误请大家指正，这里只是给大家开个头，具体的很多问题大家得自己去研究。

1．什么是公立Grammar School？为什么我们要关注它们？

英国公立中学（secondary school）在A Level以前的阶段从课程设置来说所有中学是一样的没有任何区别，但是除了苏格兰以外的其它地区入学的形式有两类型，第一类是按照居住地距离学校最近的原则来入学完全没有入学考试（这和小学一样），学校一般称为comprehensive（所谓的community school和city academy都是这种），教会系统的中学也是这类但它们的入学是自己定入学原则，第二类中学的入学需要入学考试选拔学生所以叫Selective State Secondary School，因为这类学校都是过去的Grammar School延袭下来的（历史延袭后面谈），所以大家都还是称它们为Grammar School，因为有入学考试它们可以说等同于国内的重点中学，是不是Grammar School不能光看学校名字要看学校的性质，大部分Grammar School的名字里面没有Grammar（比如Kingston的Tiffin男女），名字里面有Grammar的有可能是私校（比如Kingston Grammar School）。

为什么很多父母要关注Grammar School？因为这类学校学生考试成绩非常好（可能教学质量也好，debatable！），一流的Grammar school考试成绩比很多私立学校还好。每年英格兰GCSE和A level考试成绩的公立中学排名榜前100名不是Grammar的中学非常少。

2．公立Grammar School一般录取办法和考试的几种方式。（请查学校网站确认！）

申请Grammar school除了填council的统一的申请表以外一般还需要填学校单独的申请表。入学录取有一般有三个方法，第一个办法，完全看入学考试成绩从英国任何地方来的学生都同等对待。第二个办法是把名额分成两部分，一部分保留给本council的孩子另外一部分公开招，当然都是按照入学成绩录取。第三个办法是，按照考试成绩录取但只录取本council的孩子，比如说Berkshire有很多Grammar School，没有太突出的但都不错，它就只收本council的孩子，外地孩子可以去考但入学之前必须搬入council地区。注意：以前不分地区任何人都可以考的学校迫于本地居民压力也开始设考区限制学生居住范围了。

Grammar有几种不同的考法，考的东西不太一样。（一）考Verbal Reasoning 和Non-verbal Reasoning，(二)第一轮考Verbal Reasoning 和Non-verbal Reasoning，通过第一轮以后第二轮考English和Maths，（三）Verbal Reasoning，Non-verbal Reasoning，English和Maths都考，录取按照总分。个别学校还会加个General Knowledge。现在很多过去用第一种考试方法的学校都开始改成第二或者第三种考试方法了。

Verbal Reasoning 和Non-verbal基本可以说是考IQ，所以它们是考孩子的Potential，考VR和NVR的学校说，这是考intelligence的考试所以准备没有用，这说法完全不对，比如VR需要很多词汇，多准备词汇量大了当然就会考的好，NVR靠准备提高成绩难度比较大但需要准备了解和熟悉考试的format。小孩年龄小的时候差别几个月智力发展差别很大，这样同一个年级7，8月份的孩子比9月份的孩子比就吃亏很多，因为VR和NVR是考IQ的考试，所以计算分数的时候要进行补偿，VR和NVR的最后分数都是age weighted的。

English和Maths的考试是考小孩实际达到的水平（Attainment），这个分数就不会对年龄进行补偿了。我觉得这个阶段English很重要，English阅读理解的能力会影响到Maths和Reasoning，简单点说如果问题不怎么理解那怎么做Maths和Reasoning。English里面很多中国孩子觉得困难的是写作。Maths的话中国孩子一般都很好，但如果English差的话很多Maths的问题会理解错误。英国小学教Maths的方法和中国的方法有不同，如果要辅导孩子做Maths要注意不要confuse孩子。很多中国孩子的Maths都会超前很多，但超前不一定对考试有好处，考Maths注重的是Accuracy和Speed，如果懂的内容超前了，但基础不扎实那考试也考不好。

要考好的Grammar School，完全依靠学校是不行的，再好的公立小学也不行，就是私立也不一定行。学校的教育目标是为大部分孩子服务的，它不可能push个别小孩也不可能帮个别小孩去准备竞争激烈的Grammar School考试。要想考好的Grammar school必须父母自己上阵和孩子一起准备或者找Private Tutor单独辅导。

月份小的孩子考Grammar School是不是“吃亏”？：同样一年级的学生8月份的和9月份出生的差不多差一年，小孩差几个月智力发展是有很大差别的，这已经有很多研究证明了，一般来说大部分孩子需要到13岁以后才能catch up，这样看起来月份小的孩子在考学校时候有点吃亏，但也不一定。考公立grammar school的时候大部分学校主要考reasoning （verbal reasoning和non verbal reasoning），这个考试主要是考IQ的，为了公平对待所有月份的孩子，reasoning考试的成绩需要“standardized”，就是说给小月份的孩子加分，每3个月一个加分段，这样看起来6月份是最好的了，在加分最多的一个加分段（6，7，8）里面最大  。不过考Maths和English就没办法了，因为Maths和English是不加分的。

考公立Grammar School到达难不难？：有人会说不难因为看到很多中国人家孩子都考上了，有人会说难因为一个学校100多个名额2000来人考而且考的人越来越多。我说难考但不是因为考的人越来越多，因为很多人就是凑热闹的不一定有竞争力，但看另外一个数据可以看出有多难，我知道一个学校一个年级160人来自80多个小学，平均每个小学就2个人，这可以看出多难了，很多outstanding的小学也不是每年都有学生考上Grammar。

3．为什么一些地方有公立Grammar School而另外的地区没有？

苏格兰的教育系统和英格兰威尔士不一样那就不说它了，那为什么有的地区有Grammar School而有的地区没有？是这历史形成的。

1944年开始英国立法实行全民中小学免费义务教育，这个时候对中小学进行规范化，小学（Primary School）从5岁开始分Infant School （5到7岁）和Junior School（7到11岁）。中学（Secondary School）从11到16岁，11岁对学生进行分流进入两类不同的学校Grammar School和Secondary Modern，Grammar School保留古代的文法学校传统主要注重学习（academic），Secondary Modern主要注重Practical Skills。16岁就完成了义务免费教育了，Grammar School 学生16岁以后如果想上大学那就都上6th Form College（16到18）。最早的时候上Secondary Modern的学生是上不了大学的，后来1960年引入了Certificate of Secondary Education (CSE)这些学生才有可能考虑上大学。

在那个年代的公立教育系统，11岁是个坎，在这时候开始分流，分流就是靠著名（或者臭名昭著）的11+考试，可以把它叫做中学入学考试，考的过的上中学考不过的就上技术学校校（一考定终身了）。

1960年代初工党当政，当时非常重视教育他们要让所有人都享受公平教育机会和提供更多教育机会，当时成立了很多大学（比如York，Warwick等）另外立法取消Grammar School就是说不对学生分流不按照学生的考试能力分流，公党的打算是取消所有公立Grammar School，所有中学都是Comprehensive（就是海纳百川了），但当时很多Grammar School坚决反对很多Local Council也强烈反对，所以一批公立Grammar School决定独立出来私营（这就是为什么现在私校统称Independent School的由来），另外还有一批Grammar School和Local council决定保留这些学校在公立系统里面，入学还是保留全部或者部分入学考试，它们就成了如今的Selective State Secondary，不过大家还是习惯性的称它们为Grammar School，比如Queen Elizabeth's和Henrietta Barnett就是这样的学校。全英格兰和威尔士一千多所Grammar School就剩下了100多所公立的Grammar School了。北爱尔兰好像仍然还是原来的Grammar+Secondary Modern系统（不确定），苏格兰教育系统一直都不一样。

用别人用过有成功经验的。

咱们中国人应该互相交流经验，不要怕中国人之间竞争，要去和印度人竞争，grammar school里面印度人比例实在是非常高，相比之下中国人就没有几个。

去年我儿子学校80多个考，只有10多个Pass，很多个学生都哭了，因为不够时间做，真担心我儿子明年就考了

多练习速度就可以提高，一个小学考上10几个非常非常好了。

这168所只是fully selective schools
有些说起来是comprehensive school，只是就近收20来个人，剩下也得考

说白了，没有考试筛选，学校生源怎么可能好？
