[原创] UK Universities

UK universities

Are you considering going to
a university? Or are you already an university student? Do you think you
understand enough about the different types of universities in UK?  Are you
aware that there are different kind of courses available and do you know what
those courses are? This post is all about UK universities, to give you a better
understanding of UK universities of course!

Types of Universities

Campus university - these
are normally situated on the outskirt of cities or in the suburb where the
environment is nice and quiet, so if you are the kind of person who likes
tranquillity and the nice, peaceful environment, campus universities are
probably for you. The quiet environment would certainly create a more academic
atmosphere for people to concentrate on whatever they are studying. However, the
downside is, they are normally quite far away from cities, so you will have to
travel to cities a lot to buy necessary materials. This will be time consuming
and will cause economical problems to certain individuals. Also, if you don't
want to live in the campus provided by the university, you will have to find
your own house to rent and it could be quite far away from the university.

Example of campus universities
include York University, Bath University etc.

York University

City University - these are
completely opposite from campus university. They are located near city centres
if not this. So going to such universities would certainly be less boring - for
some people. Shops, pubs, malls, entertainment places, cinemas, all those kind
of leisure facilities are located in city centres which means you will be very
near to those facilities when you go to such universities. For some people this
is absolutely essential! The disadvantage of those universities are of course,
you can easily get disrupted by all the leisure and entertainment activities
around you that you study less and less until you fail. For people who's not
good at self-control, this kind of university might cause you problem.

Examples of city
universities include UCL, Liverpool university etc.

UCL

Large universities and small
universities - Large universities have lots of students and teachers. They are
good for people who like to meet new people all the time. Small universities
have far less students, so you will know everyone better in a small university,
and so this will be appreciated by people who like homie environment.

Collegiate Universities -
those are universities that use college system. Each student belongs to a
college in a university. Each college will have different facilities, style etc
to suit different people, and the standard of each college will also be
different. This means some colleges will be easier to get into while others
significantly harder.  The advantage of collegiate system is obvious. It
makes you feel like you belong to a big family, a bit like tutor groups in
school. However, you might not get as much freedom as in non-collegiate
universities, since each college will have its own rule and you must obey them.

Examples of collegiate
universities are Cambridge, Oxford etc.

Types of
Courses

There are
mainly two types of courses, vocational course and non vocational course.
Vocational basically means a job-related course, and non vocational courses the
opposite. So main reason for doing a vocational course is so that you can apply
whatever you've learn into jobs to earn money and to contribute to the world.
Doing non vocational course is mainly for interests, and job opportunities are
very restricted. Examples of vocational courses include biology, chemical,
engineering, computing science etc.
Examples of none vocational
courses include art, history, archaeology, palaeontology etc.

For most
Chinese, vocational subjects would certainly be more appropriate.

Entry systems..

Most good universities only allow you to enter if you achieved
the grade they wanted, for example, Cambridge wants AAA for applying for natural
science, and you must achieve that in order to quality. However, some other
universities, the not so good ones on the league table, allow you to enter if
you achieved certain ucas points. This is more flexible because apart from
getting UCAS points from A level grades, UCAS can also be gained from various
other programmes including key skills.

UCAS POINT:

A 60pts

B 50pts

C 40pts

D 30pts

IT level 3 20pts

Communication level 3 20pts

Application of number level 3 20pts

So by doing the key skills is equivalent to 1 A
grade

Conclusion

UK universities certainly various a lot and different
universities suit different people. Its not all about reputation. The glamour of
Cambridge and oxford might be impressive but they are not necessarily what
everyone want, equally, crap universities are not desired by others too.

So the best advice of choosing a university if to research for
it. There are some good resources here.

GOOD
UNIVERSITY GUIDES

As
with all education league tables, it is important that you look at the findings
with a fair degree of cynicism and read how the ratings are decided.

GRADUATE DESTINATIONS

A
number of universities are publishing their graduate destinations on the
internet. Most universities provide information on individual courses. Some
universities provide a full picture of their destinations and others are more
selective.

Hope this is useful
