Two Chinese nationals were arrested in Cleckheaton yesterday after the UK Border Agency carried out operations targeting illegal working, leaving the employer facing a fine of up to £20,000.

Acting on intelligence, immigration officers from the UK Border Agency conducted an illegal working operation to the Wok-in Wok-Out, Chinese Takeaway on 5 Market Street in Cleckheaton at around 1900 on Thursday evening.

Officers questioned those inside and checked their documents to see if they were entitled to work. Two Chinese nationals were arrested - one 41 year-old male and one 38 year old female. Both have been arrested on suspected illegal entry and have been detained.

The restaurant was served with a Notice of Potential Liability (NOPL) in relation to two of the workers. The employer has 28 days to provide the UK Border Agency with evidence that the correct right-to-work checks were carried out or face fines of up to £10,000 per illegal worker.

Steve Lamb, regional operations director of the UK Border Agency in Yorkshire, Humber and the North East, said:

'We will not tolerate illegal working, in Cleckheaton or anywhere else - it undercuts British wages, exploits vulnerable workers and hurts legitimate law-abiding businesses.

‘As long as there are illegal jobs, the UK will be an attractive place for illegal immigrants. That’s why we have to put a stop to employers who don’t play by the rules and will seek to remove illegal workers from the UK.’

Anyone who suspects that illegal workers are being employed at a business can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where anonymity can be assured.

Two people have been arrested in Darlington and the brothel where they worked shut down after the UK Border Agency’s regional crime team carried out an operation targeting illegal working.

The operation of brothels in the North East region has a negative impact on our local communities and will not be tolerated

Detective Inspector Graham Brown

Acting on intelligence, the joint UK Border Agency crime team - which consists of UK Border Agency officers and seconded police officers from Durham, Cleveland and Northumbria Police - raided the rented residence on Eldon Street in Darlington on Thursday 16 July.

Officers questioned those inside and checked their documents to see if they were entitled to work. They found a Chinese male in the United Kingdom illegally and a British female from Birmingham of Chinese origin within the premises. Both subjects were arrested for suspected involvement in ‘managing and keeping a brothel used for prostitution’ later interviewed and then bailed late Friday afternoon.

Detective Inspector Graham Brown, who leads the UK Border Agency’s North East regional crime team, confirmed that the property had been used as a brothel employing Chinese females for only a matter of days before the team closed the illegal business down. He said:

‘The operation of brothels in the North East region has a negative impact on our local communities and will not be tolerated. Action will be taken against those persons responsible. We must enforce our immigration laws robustly and deny the privileges of those persons here in the United Kingdom illegally involved in organised immigration crime.’

Anyone who suspects that illegal workers are being employed at a business can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be assured.
