The news from China is so terrible. I began to hear about it on Tuesday I think, and every day it got worse. The death and injury toll is so bad, and so many, many people must be homeless, and desolate, and all those people who have lost children in the schools – it is so bad.
I was really impressed with the rapid mobilisation by China of the army and other rescue workers and with the leadership at this dreadful time of the premier and president. They have been there and encouraged the rescue workers and been open to outside help, freely admitting that it was much worse even than it appeared at first.
As I heard the news, I thought of all my Chinese friends, and now, such things are no longer far away in another country, but closely affect people I know well. I am so sorry to hear that some of your friends are homeless; there is little one can do from here but think of them and offer whatever practical help one can. Sometimes aid appeals seem to me to be worthless because they never reach the suffering people (I have seen that in Africa in the past); I would like to make a contribution to any appeal that you think would help – or to any personal help that one can give – maybe you can let me know how best to do that?
