In this argument the author reaches the conclusion that… The basis for this recommendation is that… An additional reason given in support of this recommendation is that…(The author cites…as an example in support of this recommendation). At first glance, the author’s argument appears to be somewhat convincing, but further reflection reveals that it omits some important concerns that should be addressed to substantiate the argument.

In the first place,

In the second place,

In the third place,

In conclusion, the author fails to provide adequate justification for… As it stands, the reasoning does not constitute a logical argument in favor of the recommendation. To strengthen the argument, the author would have to provide evidence to prove that… To better assess the argument, we need additional detailed information about…so that we can establish the conclusion whether…

The issue of whether…is a complex and controversial one. Different people hold different views due to their respective angles. On the one hand, as is well-known and has often been advocated, …; on the other hand, others probably insist that… We do not have to look very far to see the valid standpoint of this matter. In the following analysis, I would like to reason and provide evidence favoring the former one and refuting the latter one.

The author commits a fallacy of causal oversimplification. The line of the reasoning is that because A occurred before B, the former event is responsible for the latter. (The author uses the positive correlation between A and B to establish causality. However, the fact that A coincides with B does not necessarily prove that A caused B.) But this is fallacious reasoning unless other possible causal explanations have been considered and ruled out. For example, perhaps C is the cause of these events or perhaps B is caused by D.

Insufficient-sample

The evidence the author provides is insufficient to support the conclusion drawn from it. One example is logically unsounded to establish a general conclusion (The statistics from only a few recent years are not necessarily a good indicator of future trends), unless it can be shown that A1 is representative of all A. It is possible that… In fact, in face of such limited evidence, the conclusion that B is completely unwarranted.

第三宗罪: 错误类比 (based on a false analogy )<横向>

The argument rests on the assumption that A is analogous to B in all respects. This assumption is weak, since although there are points of comparison between A and B, there is much dissimilarity as well. For example, A…, however, B… Thus, it is likely much more difficult for B to do…

第四宗罪 all things are equal<纵向>

The author commits the fallacy of “all things are equal”. The fact that happened two years ago is not a sound evidence to draw a conclusion that… The author assumes without justification that the background conditions have remained the same at different times or at different locations. However, it is not clear in this argument whether the current conditions at AA are the same as they used to be two years ago. Thus it is impossible to conclude that…

Either-Or choice

The author assumes that AA and BB are mutually exclusive alternatives and there is no room for a middle ground. However, the author provides no reason for imposing an either-or choice. Common sense tells us that adjusting both AA and BB might produce better results.

第六宗罪 survey is doubtful

The poll cited by the author is too vague to be informative. The claim does not indicate who conducted the poll, who responded, or when, where and how the poll was conducted. (Lacking information about the number of people surveyed and the number of respondents, it is impossible to access the validity of the results. For example, if 200 persons were surveyed but only 2 responded, the conclusion that…would be highly suspect. Because the argument offers no evidence that would rule out this kind of interpretations,) Until these questions are answered, the results of the survey are worthless as evidence for the conclusion.

The author falsely depends on gratuitous assumption that… However, no evidence is stated in the argument to support this assumption. In fact, this is not necessarily the case. For example, it is more likely that… Therefore, this argument is unwarranted without ruling out such possibility

ISSUE:

Recently there is a debate over whether ……Some people assert that…,

while other people believe that…As a matter of fact, the issue of whether

…… is a complex and controversial one. Different people hold different

views due to their distinct backgrounds. Therefore, there is not a

universal answer to this question, and whether one choice takes precedence

over the other may quite depend on the specific situation. The decision,

nevertheless, is not an easy one to make. Actually, the final judgment

should rely on a case-by-case analysis. As far as I am concerned, however,

I agree that …. , and do not agree that…… My view can be greatly

substantiated by the following discussions.

The first argument that can be presented to develop my position is that… A

good example may be found in the case that… Under this circumstance, it is

obvious that….

In addition, there is another reason for me to choose this statement. The

reason is not far to seek…. To illustrate, let us consider that … Hence,

another equally important aspect is that….

Admittedly, it may be true that …. in some conditions. However, this alone

does not constitute a sufficient support to claim that ….,Actually, these

cases are rare and therefore are too specific and too weak to strengthen

the view that…When the advantages and disadvantages of x and y are

carefully examined, the most striking conclusion is obvious that…

To sum up, due to the above mentioned reasons, which sometimes correlate

with each other to generate an integrate whole and thus become more

convincing than any single one of them, we may be comfortable to say that

…., because….

ARGUMENT

In this argument, the author concludes that… To support his conclusion,

the author points out that…. In addition, the author reasons that…

Further more, he also assumes that … . At first glance, the author’s

argument appears to be somehow appealing, while a close examination will

reveal how groundless it is. We do not have to look very far to see the

invalidity of this argument. This argument is problematic for the following

reasons.

In the first place, this argument rests on a gratuitous assumption that ….

The author unfairly assumes that…. However, the assumption is questionable

because the author provides no evidence to support this argument. The

arguer fails to take into account other facts that might contribute to the

result that ……… It is likely that , ………………; it is also likely that

………………………… Any of these scenarios, if true, would show that

…………………… (72)

Therefore, this argument is unwarranted without ruling out such possibility.

In the second place, the argument commits a logic fallacy of “after this

and therefore because of this”. In no case can the mere fact that… be

cited as evidence to support the assumption that there is a causal-effect

relationship between A and B. Moreover, that just because B can be

statistically correlated with A does not necessarily mean that A is the

cause of B. In fact, the author has obviously neglected the possibility of

other alternative facts such as…, or … may contribute to a certain extent

to B. It may be only a coincidence that …… . Unless the author can rule

out other factors relevant to …, this assumption in question can not be

accepted.

In the third place, the evidence that the author provides is insufficient

to support the conclusion drawn from it. One example is rarely sufficient

to establish a general conclusion. Unless the arguer can show that A1 is

representative of all A, the conclusion that B… is completely unwarranted.

In fact, in face of such limited evidence, it is fallacious to draw any

conclusion at all.

In the fourth place, the argument has also committed a false analogy

fallacy. The argument rests on the assumption that A is analogous to B in

all respects, and the author assumes without justification that all things

are equal, and that the background conditions have remained the same at

different times or at different locations. There is, however, no guarantee

that this is the case. Nor does the author cite any evidence to support

this assumption. Lacking this assumption, the conclusion that … is

entirely unfounded. In fact, it is highly doubtful that the facts drawn

from B are applicable to A. Differences between A and B clearly out weight

the similarities, thus making the analogy highly less than valid. For

example, A…, however, B… Thus, it is likely much more difficult for B

to do…

In addition, the conclusion unjustifiably relies on the poll while the

validity of the survey itself is doubtful. The poll cited by the author is

too vague to be informative. The claim does not indicate who, when, how and

by whom the survey is conducted, neither does it mention what is the sample

size, or how the samples are selected. Until these questions are answered

the results are worthless as evidence to support that….

Besides, the author assumes that A and B are mutually exclusive

alternatives. However, the author has never offered any reasons or

evidences for imposing an either/or choice. Common sense and observation

tells us that adjoining both A and B might produce better results.

To sum up, the conclusion lacks credibility because the evidence cited in

the analysis does not lend strong support to what the author claims. To

make the argument more convincing concerning…. , the arguer would have to

provide more information that………………. The arguer should also

demonstrate that……………….to make this argument logically acceptable.

(51)

Since the author commits the above mentioned logical mistakes and fails to

consider the whole situation comprehensively, his ideas should not be

adopted. The conclusion would be strengthened if he….

In conclusion, the arguer fails to substantiate his claim that …. Because

the evidence cited in the analysis does not lend strong support to what the

arguer claims. To strengthen the argument, the arguer must convince us

that…. In addition, the arguer could have to provide more precise

information to support his claim.

It is entirely possible that management has become lax regarding any number

of factors that can affect the bottom line such as inferior products,

careless product pricing, inefficient production, poor employee expense

monitoring, ineffective advertising, sloppy buying policies and other

wasteful spending.

当我点了两次确定(我怎么记得有人说是三次),看到我的分数(Q5*/V3*/T70)时,我想起了以前为了练听力看了无数遍的一部99年拍的美国片《一吻定江山》(Never Been Kissed)里的一段台词(稍有改动),“That score, that moment, when you see the score, everything around you becomes hazy. And the only thing in focus is you and this score. Then you realize, that score is the only score that you suppose to have for the rest of your life. And for one moment, you get this amazing gift, and you wanna laugh and you wanna cry, ‘cause you feel so lucky that you got it and so scared that it will go away all the same time.”

☆☆☆GMAT FAQ(兼作菜鸟入门完全手册)☆☆☆

☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

标志词:conclusion; inferred; implied; supported; if above true, then

it is also true。

Which of the following are supported by the argument above?

Which of the following support the argument above?

A.假设题:

premise; not true unless; depend on; rely on.

B.加强题:

标志词:support(注意和归纳题目的区分); strengthen, conclusion can be

drawn if it were true that.

C.削弱题:

标志词:weaken; cast doubt; argue against; damage; counter; challenge;

flaw; refute; jeopardize; criticism; undermine; drawback; reasoning error;

weakness.

文章内部标志词:A is due to B; A is attribute to B; A is result of B;

blame B on/for A; B is responsible for

A; credit A to B.

XX(应该是苦)。

作文 :imagine that you have a chance to get some land, so, how do you use them and give the reason.

M: Hey listen…I’ve signed up for tennis this semester. How about joining me? It sounds like a fun class.

W: Gee. I don’t know. Money’s tight this semester. How much is it?

M: It’s only ninety dollars a semester and that includes extra court time.

W:You mean we could play whenever we wanted?

M: Sure. As long as they’re not holding a class.

W:Hmm… That sounds like a pretty good deal then. Besides, I really need to lose a few pounds.

M:Oh by the way, the classes are at the East Campus P.E. complex. You do have a car don’t you?

W:Wait a minute… I smell a rat. You’re just trying to get a ride, aren’t you?

M:No really. I just thought it would be great to take class together. I was going to take the bus!

W: Yeah, right!

M: NO, no, I really mean it. It’ll be great. We can improve our game and get in shape at the same time. Beside, you get elective credits for it. Come on, are you in?

W: I’ll think about.

M: Great, I’ll call registration and sign you up.

W:Not so fast. I said I’ll think about it.

Q: Why did the man suggest that the woman should take the tennis class?

Q: What did the woman agree to do at the end of the conversation?

fortified=strengthen

有几个单词题还记得:counterpart=style, peat, bituminous, anthracite,exorbitant=expensive

我觉得511的题型可能在9或10再考,所以which do you prefer?

注意一些小问题,TWE中有些which do you prefer?

1、 teamwork(因为现代社会个人力量小,团队才可以做大事,所以要有合作精神)

2、 honesty(这样才可以赢得信任)

3、 humour(这样感觉轻松)

4、 generous(比如写邻居,同屋的,大方的人可以在困难的时候帮助你)

advantages

1、 economic development

2、 requirement of society

disadvantages

1、 noise

2、 garbage

What Will Happen If China Enters WTO?

Every Chinese is looking forward to China’s entry into WTO, widely seen as a blessing and a promise of prosperity. It seems to be so at first sight, however, on reflection, we’re convinced that it’s just another coin with two sides.

On the one hand, both the nation and people will benefit greatly from China’s entry into WTO. Shut out of WTO, China Dused to be deprived of equal trade opportunities and was placed at a distinct disadvantage in world trade. This situation will change if China enters WTO. In addition, foreign companies will stream into China and offer great job opportunities, which, in a sense, will relieve the unemployment problem.

On the other hand, the entry will impose some negative effects on China. State-owned enterprises in China are undergoing great difficulties, which will be more acute with the flow of foreign competitors into China.

In short, excited about the advantages caused by the entry, we should not lose sight of the severe challenges posed by it.

例文:

Fast Food

Fast food is becoming more popular in China, especially among children and teenagers. Today, it’s certainly difficult to think of any other single thing that represents the fast pace of modern society as powerfully as fast food.

There are several reasons for its popularity. First, it is very convenient and saves a lot of time. The trends of modern society seem to all point to one ultimate goal ―― saving time, and fast food well serves this purpose. You just go into a fast food restaurant, order your food, and your food is ready in no time. You can either eat it there or take it away. Second, its popularity is also attributed to the clean and comfortable environment of fast food restaurants, the excellent service, and the guaranteed qualith of food.

However, in terms of nutrition, fast food is far from satisfactory. It usually does not compose a balanced diet and is low in nutritional value. Thus, doctors suggest that people, especially children, eat fast food as little as possible.

Although cooking at home is time ― consuming and the following washing-up tiresome, it offers healthy and delicious meals your body likes and needs. Fast food is only a good choice when you are in a hurry and turn to it once in a while.

Preserving Natural Resources

Through the changes in the ways of making a living in a family over several generations, the cartoon aims at sounding a warning against man’s wasteful use of natural resources and emphasizing the urgent need to preserve these resources.

Ever since man appeared on the earth, man’s survival has been heavily relied on nature. Almost everything we use in our everyday life comes from nature, ranging from the food we eat, the water we drink, to the wood which is turned into furiture. With the development of technology and population growth, the amount and range of materials used has increased at an alarming rate. However, natural resources are not inexhaustible. Some reserves are already on the brink of exhaustion and there is no hope of replacing them. The widespread water shortage is an example in point. If man continued to squander natural resources with no thought for the future, the later generations would end up selling sand, as is the case in the cartoon, and the whole world would be in a mess.

Time is running out. It is up to us to take effective measures before the situation gets out of hand.

Global Shortage of Fresh Water

People often think that water will never be used up. There is plenty of water, such as rain, water from the rivers and wells. It seems as if water is always available around us and we never have to worry about water shortage.

In fact water is rather limited on the earth. With the rapid increase of population and fast development of industries, water is more needed than before. At the same time, a large amount of water has been polluted and wasted every day. Some big cities in China are facing the problem of water shorage already. There, water supply is controlled and industry has been restrained.

What should we do about the water shorage? I think, first, the people should be made aware of the real situation about the water. Everyone should consciously save on water and certain law should be made that no water will be polluted. We have to protect the existing water resources and develop new ones. In this way I believe that our cities will not be thirsty for water in the future.
