Don’t worry. Halfords will take full responsibility for the BMW and car rental costs as they are clearly at fault.
This has nothing to do with OBD registration, they have used the wrong battery and caused a power surge to the ecu and screen. Batteries go dead on lots of cars after they haven’t been driven for weeks. Swapping out a new battery is a simple task.
There is a reason why Halfords is nicknamed Hal-frauds and you shouldn’t be taking your car to them. Use an independent garage who a friend or neighbour uses so you know you are not being ripped off.
Make sure you keep a record of all the issues and time wasted so you can take this up with senior management at their head office as the minimum you should receive is all costs plus the inconvenience they have caused. Do not take a gift voucher or credit to use at halfords and insist on cash , if you don’t make any progress, simply go online and publish your issues via their Twitter and Facebook accounts. Finally you have trading standards as a last resort.
