Volunteering
I want to do some volunteering, will this be included in the 20 hours per week limit or is this classed as in addition to the 20 hours?
It is important to differentiate between “unpaid employment” and “voluntary work”.
If you are volunteering for a registered charity/voluntary organisation with no contractual obligations and no payment (beyond travel allowances/expenses) then this can be classed as voluntary work and could be carried out in addition to your 20 hours per week part-time working allowance. The nature of the voluntary work should also be in line with the aims/objectives/main purpose of the charity.
Volunteers should not simply be working unpaid as one of the normal complement of administrative staff at the charity or taking unpaid employment in another organisation. In this case the work is likely to be “unpaid employment” and not “volunteering” and will form part of your 20 hours per week working allowance. Seek advice if you are unsure, before progressing.
Examples of appropriate volunteering opportunities would include:
Organising a fundraising project for the Red Cross
Recruiting blood donors for the National Blood Service
Organising a Christmas event for residents in a hospice
Volunteering at a national event such as the Olympics
