I am having my placement with BMW oxford at the monment and i am in the purchasing department.
The process in find a placement could be very long, but you should never get depressed and put yourself down.
When you are in confusion, you can try to talk to people with experience or go to talk to the placement officers who can give you some good suggestions.

i’m doing MSc Management and Finance atm, and i did BSc Mathematics and Psycholoyg in UK as well. I’d love to find a placement or intership during this coming summer. Can anyone who’s got experience or good suggestions help me, please? thank you!

I’m reading Computer Science Honour, second year at Uni. They offer only one vacancy cross the uk. I’m lucky to be the only one really…
The placement is within F1 Team Performance Software Engineer Group, writing off-car softwares for other engineers, so they will decide car settings according to our software before the race. It’s very much different from other software developement jobs. PLUS, they will send me to Spain or Shanghai in May/October 2008 for their racing event.
I also received interview invitation from Intel and IBM yesterday… but I kicked them out, still fancy F1 tho !

我现在大二了哦，刚申请了３份placement, 三个都给我回复了．
第一个是intel, IBM和Renault F1 Team (雷诺一级方程式车队)．
雷诺车队最先给我消息的，然后要我去面试，跟他们的manager聊过，说有１００多个学生申请这个位置， ７个人进入面试， 最后就选一个人进入他们的performance software engineer group. 我还是进去了，面试的第二周，他们就联系我告诉我好消息．．．那时候兴奋得３天没有睡着.
IBM和intel最近才跟我联系，个人不是特别喜欢Intel, IBM开发软件的工作有点勉强，所以我最后还是决定去雷诺Ｆ１车队了。
原来很想找EA Pogo的一分在线游戏开发的工作，后来发现地点在加拿大… sony entertainment给PSP写游戏的要１月份才开始，我等不了那么久，这种事情要尽快，要不是倒下办学起的话可能压力会比较大．
如果有希望的话，毕业了可能会申请到加纳大的工作，大部分喜欢的职位都在那边…哎…

一般来说大公司提供工签的机率比较大.
大部分的投资银行都提供签证,但是通过他们本身的面试考核跟筛选本来就是一件不容易的事情.
学金融会计的相对来说也比较好找工作,四大公司(DELOITTE,E&Y,PWC,KPMG)不仅提供工签,而且还有相应的CHINA PROGRAMME,专门针对中国人,录取人数也不少.
再来就是engineering了,这方面英国比较缺人,竞争相对来说小一点,虽然工资比投资银行低,但工作会轻松许多.
除了伦敦以外,个人觉得伯明翰,曼彻斯特都是找工不错的选择,而且因为物价教低,生活压力也相对小一些.
engineering工作压力才大, 工资不比商业的低，好的地方小小的程序员第一年就３０ｋ以上还有ｂｏｕｎｕｓ， 大公司不一定给工作签的，中小的公司反而会比较容易．

could u share a bit on how to write up a kickass CV and cover letter? i know they r vital but just a bit more concrete on how best to present urself on papers amongst thousands of candidates so at least the resume wont be dumped into trash can right away before 1st round!! plus i have no work experience, what is best for me to focus on highlighting instead?

I have been in the uk for about 3 years... worked a lot while studying to be honest....
first job was sending newspapers in the early moring.. 8 quid a week!
second part-time job worked as a bar tender..in Oxford while I was taking foundation at Brookes....
I got my first-class results at Brookes moved to current uni, still remember those hard days night. 20 hours lecture, 10 hours work as a part-time IT consaultant, while spent 15 hours a week trying to run projects by myself and start own website design business. Now it's all going well, owns big uk clients, well-known book publishers, BBC jurnalist.... still got first-class for my first year.
I would say I have more experience than other local uk students, being passion during the interview, be calm and tell them as much as information about yourself, not just answering "yes" or "no", shows your skills and personality, egar to learn and get progress. Employers want to know wherther you are the right person. During the interview, it's the opportunity to show off!
For engineer student, please take your courses seriously... as most companys test your technical knowledge done by paper...e.g. programming ... First year is important, although it will not count into your final result (25% second year + 75% final year)...

认识几个外国学生, 两个在微软工作(uk只有marketing之类的placement, 开发都在usa和canada), 一个在Sony做PS3研发的实习工作。 他们的能力真的没话说, 一看到人…他们的神色都和别人有区别。所以我觉得还是在于自己, 如果来外国是想有点成就的话，要好好想想怎样利用有限的时间提高自己的skills…大学里面机会还是很多的。

WORK EXPERIENCE对申请PLACEMENT和INTERN的同学可有可无的，最主要的是你大一的成绩和你所参加的一些活动。所以建议大一大二的同学在能保持好成绩的同时，多多参加活动，CLUB, SOCIETY之类的，这些和工作经营一样体现一个人的能力，这种经验多了，你的CV也自然充实了 :cn15:
2个礼拜前拿到Merrill Lynch 的offer, 已经accepted啦~可是现在又有其他公司的interview, 想知道如果偶最后想去其他公司的话…需要承担法律责任不?

I don't think you'll have any legal implications, but don't quote me on that. It's better to read the acceptance letter one more time, just in case. I got an offer from one of the big 4, I signed back with them, but I don't know if I want work there. Cause the offer didn't say anything about legal liablibilities if am not going back. So, I guess read the contract more carefully before you sign.
btw, which university are you attending? How's Merrill Lynch's interview process? Competitive? thanks

hi thx for your information.i ll b graduated from LSE in 10 days. i just read the offer letter one more time and apparently there isn't anything about the legal liabilities! so i guess it will be okay i turn it down eventually right?it's a shame though, i really should have known this earlier, then i wouldn't turn E&Y's 1st round down this morning...
ML's selection process is very similiar to other IBs and big 4s. first round interview contains one competency-based interview with 2 managers or assistant managers, typical questions, initiative, teamwork, motivation, leadership etc. followed by one numerical test, 35 mins for 32 questions (as far as i can remember).
The AC goes like this: case-study and presentation+group discussion and presentation+interview with senior+diagrammic test, 30 mins for 50 questions. After that you will have tour to the ML financial centre. Then all of u will be seated in a tea room waiting for the interviewers to decide who is going to get the offer and you will be informed one by one. i would say everyone in my AC was eager and competitive, mostly study at LSE, IC and Warwick. though the whole AC was fast-paced, dun worry, it was reasonably enjoyable and ML ppl were friendly and trying to assure u.
so tat was it really..if there is anything u would like to know please shout.thx

Hey, Congrats on graduating! That's so great! I am actually studying in Canada, but I will come to UK and join you guys in Jan - June for one exchange term at U of Bristol. Then, I'll be graduating in June back in Canada. hehe~~~ ML Canada has very limited position open for business undergrad, I would assume it'll be the same in UK. I think you are excellent by getting an offer from ML. Good luck with the rest of the job hunting ^^
