Quantitative Advisory Services – Quant Developer

The role is within the team which provides quantitative risk modelling services to the Financial Services Industry. We are looking to hire a strong quantitative developer to work on the design and delivery of risk modelling solutions. This will involve working with our clients to build robust stress testing, forecasting and calculation engines. The role will cover credit, market and operational risk, with initial focus on credit risk.

The role will be based in our London office, but may require travel to client sites throughout the UK and internationally.

Technical / Development Skills:

We require strong programming capability across all aspects of solution and model implementation. The ideal candidate will have worked on end-to-end design, build and test of modelling solutions. You should enjoy all aspects of implementation from writing complex financial modelling algorithms, to optimising database queries, to producing high impact analytics reporting. We are not interested in candidates who only want to focus on a specific area.

Key coverage areas:

· Database development and analytics: Experience working with SQL Server or Oracle. Should be comfortable writing complex queries in T-SQL or PL/SQL, have a good understanding of relational data model design, and have experience with implementing data layer functionality via Stored Procedures (SQL Server) or Packages (Oracle). Should be comfortable interfacing with calculation and user interface layers
· Excel VBA: Experience of rapid modelling or prototyping in Excel VBA. Should be familiar with Excel object model, writing functions, using classes, etc. Should also be familiar with Excel spreadsheet modelling (cash flow modelling, matrix multiplication, array formulae, etc)
· Object Orientated Programming: Ideally proficiency in C# or VB.NET. Alternatively Java, C++ or other OO languages. Experience producing modular calculation engines that support multi-threading and parallel processing across multiple servers. Understanding of the importance of optimisation in the case of high volume calculations: eg, loan level capital calculations on large portfolios, or monte-carlo models requiring high numbers of simulations.
· User Interfaces: Experience designing simple, functional and elegant user interfaces, either web based (ideally ASP.NET) or thick client. Understanding that presentation and ease of use is a critical aspect of a successful modelling solution.

Finance Skills:

We help our clients design and build quantitative risk and financial modelling solutions. You will need to have a keen interest in finance and risk, which should be evidenced by a good understanding across a range of areas, including:

· Discounted Cash Flows and Fair Value modelling
· Credit risk, in particular credit modelling around ratings, credit migrations and recoveries / loss. Experience of Basel II IRB models, impairment, loan loss forecasting and stress testing is ideal.
· Understanding of statistical modelling techniques, for example:
– Regression based analysis
– Value at Risk
– Monte-carlo simulation
– Correlation / dependency modelling
– Markov chains
– Distribution convolution and aggregation (simulation based or FFT)
· Understanding of credit portfolios, in particular mortgages and key risk and value drivers

For candidates with strong technical development skills, we are willing to accept less finance and risk modelling experience provided that (i) the candidate can evidence a strong interest in this area, and (ii) recognises the need to make a proactive effort to learn quickly on the job.

Person and Culture:

You will be joining a high performing consulting environment. Long hours, travel and tight deadlines are common. You will need to be highly motivated, innovative and flexible.

In addition to the skills listed above, key attributes are:

good numerate degree(s) (eg, MSc Economics / Econometrics, Quantitative Finance, Statistics, Maths, Physics, Engineering)
the ability to solve complex technical problems within a short time frame
the ability to describe complex technical issues in a clear non-technical way
strong analytical and interpretative skills
the ability to quickly assimilate and apply new techniques and knowledge
Successful candidates will combine risk knowledge, business understanding and deep technical skills and will be seeking a career that combines all three of these aspects together.
