Important warning – Scam!
Posted on July 24, 2012 by Samantha Logan
Students have received phone calls from someone pretending to be from UKBA. The caller knows the students’ address, passport number and university. He states that there is a problem with the visa, and asks for a fine to be paid immediately over the phone. He may threaten that UKBA officials will visit the student at home. UKBA will never ask for money in this way.
If you are approached in this way
• DO NOT PAY!
• Do not confirm that your details are correct.
• Take the caller’s details and say you will call them back, but don’t call them back.
• Report the call to the police, or come to see a member of ISST staff, who will record the details and report for you.
• If you have received this phone call and made a payment, please seek advice from International Student Support or the Student’s Union Advice Centre as soon as possible.
