You should have heard about our CIUK programme, which assists students to gain work experience. Majority of the students concern the benefit they can receive, namely salary. Typically, employers offer travel and lunch expense but salary.
Internships are a fantastic way for a student or other low skilled individuals to get a taste of a real work environment. They can find out if a particular industry or company is a good fit for them. And they can gain professional skills and work experience which is the best to explore career path direction.
Can employer benefit from this scheme? Intern, no matter talent or not, create burden on companies. Interns create time cost, opportunity cost and often monetary cost for employer to hire and train them. For those who cannot afford such costs would assign low-skilled tasks to interns.
Forcing employers to pay intern salary will lead to fewer businesses offering internships. Students have more competition to gain pre-graduate work experience in order to enrich their CVs.
We encourage students to consider internship as a long term investment. What you have learnt is more important than how much you have received.
