Heavenly River City Public Square
In my memory, “public square”
is a place for government gatherings
An open clearing, the masses in wild celebration
crowd bulging, slogans and banners floating, chants running afire
acting out a comedy or tragedy, sometimes slipping into farce
One is blind as he is caught midst the madness
like a leaf in the high wind
rolling with the chaos of the forest, agitated and even shivering
Guangzhou is rainy and muggy, overgrown with economic vegetation
this word that once seemed serious
merely signifies a giant office tower
a many-floored building. Ninety-six thousand square meters
people who loiter here at the square are mild and lethargic
the losers, like myself
feeling elation or low in cash
but his (her) arrival is not passive
desire and longing charge in the specified direction
they are staring at something real and solid
even when selecting a hair-clip, they’ll still nitpick details
hurriedly grabbing one and pulling out money—that is an outsider
the shopping assistants’ smiles are kind and amiable
and temporarily bury the complaint about traffic jams
and the harassment of thieves right outside the train station
young girls thronging to attend fashion shows
bellybuttons showing
pairs of beautiful legs, like egrets
arriving in twos and threes
looks like someone’s husband accidentally crashed into the glass
Few imperial houses are worth visiting in the South
sometimes I accompany out of town friends around there
there’s no powerful speeches
everyone is having small talks in quiet voices
so the legs get weary, the body loses its composure from exhaustion
on the second floor of Stella’s Southern Shopping Center
a lady friend gives me a youthful metal-studded shirt
made of fur. it’s stiff. pricier than a suit
and supposing I wore a scarf
I’d look like a youth from the May Fourth
this is today’s public square
the only connection to the north and to the past
Skyscrapers are the Crops of the City
fighting with rice, fighting with corn,
fighting with red sorghum and yellow beans for space
fighting with boys and girls, young and old, for space
Tall buildings are the crops of the city
the crop grows ever and ever shorter in the village
elders and children
are the last two painful species
parents dried-up and shaky, children in short supply
cities planted and seeded deeply
buildings growing new segments are broadcasting night and day
patios, rooftops, and in-house gardens
grafted with green leaves and blooming plants
the land belongs to the country, the country belongs to the people
yet does not seem to be controlled by the great nation
and seems unrelated to the antlike men, who know nothing but feeding themselves
a giant secret seal of business opportunity
covers the imperial skies
development corporations contract moneybags, hiring hands to plow the earth
the workers are still peasants, long and short term laborers
wearing safety helmets
food prices steadily rising, policymakers and businessmen’s cups running over
each day bringing more funding and greater political credits
the crops of the city begin to block out the sun
cars and pedestrians weave around their roots
like leeches, earthworms, or tadpoles
Aha, how nice, a piece of land is like a chunk of gold
the golden houses we grow, rows upon rows of golden houses
stealing space from people who can hardly afford antlike houses
those marked for demolition cling desperately to the short grains of their ancestors
wind rolls through the high skies, but the economy begins to kneel again
on another virtual patch of earth
a few real estate giants, whining and complaining on Weibo,
About their diligent work of cultivating this pasture of new hope
High Autumn
The long Northern roads are wide and quiet
courtyard houses slip slowly into dream what a blessed night
I hear a crispy leaf crackling above my head
people are small the wind powerful
the starry autumn sky expands ever forth
lamplight enough to illuminate the heart’s hidden corners
I walk in solitude along the tree-shaded road
Feeling sudden urge to embrace a huge tree nearby
these grand souls stand between heaven and earth
i wouldn’t want to rest on any of their branches
I just want to draw closer to this world
Vast Skies, Thick Earth
these mountains and rivers belong to the emperor
these mountains and streams are my motherland
one rope
pulls into the back of the plain
that deep, deep bloodstain
is my choked Yellow River
I am my own prisoner trapped in it
waves pealing yellow
so yellow even yellower than my skin
bronze chrysanthemum silk
Waves upon waves of abundant harvests in fall
a seasoned yellow earth
gullies crisscrossed with wrinkles
seeing the Yellow River startles me to the core
its nine curves and eighteen bends
endlessly surging ceaselessly depositing
Hukou Falls spitting out the mangled names of many
Yellow River, higher and higher
it’s a warning it’s an admonition
roaring by above my head
Story of the New Peach Blossom Spring
Peach blossoms shines
splashing on trees
like drops of love’s blood
a youth, brightly clad reins a darting horse , wind at his heels,
has let down the maiden of the yonder bank
a sash ring tinkles from a tree branch, flirting with ten li of Spring wind
one red blossom dulls thousand mountains
the elegant youth wields his sword and roves around
two hands folds to drift apart as flowers bloom and wilt in the solitude of a thousand years
then—the sound of oars
a Wu-Ling fisherman, clad in kudzu hemp, awakens
the other-worldly Peach Spring here
dimples are the rebirth of peach blossoms
robust steps are fetters from a prior life
love kalpa and love debt, love from another life
wading though waters, escaping to the outside of smoke
Spring wind on the river’s road, suddenly arriving at the Immortal’s home
peach blossom buns, peach blossom cheeks, peach blossom eyes
finally settled with uncanny mountains and rivers
the essence of peach blossoms — moon bright and wind clear
drifting about the world with not a care therein
and today at Wu Ling river, i suddenly see you putting on your colors
peach blossoms fall like red rain
on the Pavilion of Asking, on Sudden Terrace
the lady is shy, the peach blossoms as well
if it’s peach blossomed, you rather wouldn’t
deep purple and bright red are also pale
at this moment, South Mountain is still a precipice in the sky
the Eastern hedges feels at home and content with themselves
the poetry I write is just Yiwang River and Siluo Stream
peach petals falling
falling into Yuanming’s genealogy, page sixteen of volume two
a turn of the head and the peach has ripened, glimmering like clouds at sunset
in this moment of falling flowers
I remember that I am a student of five hundred years ago that carried a lady
Master Zhuang’s butterfly awakens in Liang Shanbo’s body

The Orbit of Life
I’ve been to Mount Tai’s Heaven Bridge
the Yellow River’s first gorge, Mangga Gorge
place names ring sonorously and forcefully
some place names are ridiculous
Guangzhou has a bridge called Three Incense Sticks
Beihai Old Town has a Breastgrab Alley
the Through Purple River, the String-Stop Crossing, the Ritz-Carlton
these local and foreign names are like a little Spring
Some of them, I only vaguely know
A Grain of Tin Sand, Behind Twelve
Erhai La’er, Senbola
they’re even prettier than their symbols when read aloud
I know each of the characters
yet have no idea what they mean
grains fell from the sky, ghosts howled at night, Cang Jie1
Had never thought of how skilled latecomers would be at word magic
poets all like wandering freely
Li Bai traversed over eighty mountains and sixty rivers
While roaming afar to the corners of the earth, they had never set foot on the sea,
The places in their poems are but continental towns or villages
Su Dongpo was exiled into the edge of land
yet his sandals never hit the depths of the ocean
and today, I finally arrive at The Seven Islets in the South Sea
they’re like pearls or a flower wreath
this isn’t a metaphor, it’s a reality
in the deep sea, I finally see the ocean water’s true inky green
waves are harder than stones, wave after wave
slaps against the little boat
one of the islands is called Zhao Shu the name of a Ming Dynasty diplomat
another North Island, covered in coral reefs, sand, and horn trees
unrelated to poets, this place is home to turtles
the place I’m going in March
is called Pu Zhe Hei, place names in the Yi dialect often
start with Pu
and puer tea, and Provence, France2
no Pu for surnames, though, it’s just a transliteration
an emotive Cavalier poem
is lavender’s hometown
walking one thousand li of road, the ancients liked to bring their homes along
Meng Haoran was also Meng Xiangyang, Kang Nanhai was Kang Youwei3
Zhang Jiuling was Zhang Qujiang
human talent lends to a place’s magic, and some places are named after their people
Han Yu of the Tang was the namesake for Guangdong’s Han River
and of course, who could forget Fan Li Village in Henan
he eloped with Xi Shi to Lake Tai4
and Sun Yixian’s Zhong Mountain used to be called Xiang Mountain
Su Shi on the tip of tongue, take food as prime want
seems to have never been to Yan Cheng (Salt City ), Jiu Quan (Wine Spring), Cha Ling (Tea Hill), Beng Bu (Mussel PorT), Gu Cheng (Grain Town)
Yu Tai,(Fish Platform) Zao Zhuang (Date Village ), these names themselves are scrumptious
and Mei County, Liu Zhou, city of flowers and trees
and Dongyang, Nanchang, Xi’an, and Beijing5
you don’t need the North Star to know where they are
Zhai Yongming’s6 White Night6 has already become a landmark in Chinese
the Hua Mountain and a piece of Rice Paddy in Dong Wan that I wrote of
and the Peach Blossom Spring, even the Heavenly River City Public Square counts
they are the map of my mind, the birthmark of my poetry
1 the inventor of Chinese characters in legend
2 note: the Chinese translation for Provence, France is puluowangsi, whose first character is in the same line of reasoning that the poet notes for words beginning with the pu 普 character.
3 note: Meng Haoran is the name of a poet, whereas Xiangyang is the name of his city; he thus went by Meng Xiangyang. There is here a similar relationship between the person, Kang Youwei, and the place name, Nanhai, as well as between the names of Zhang and Sun in the following lines.
4 note: Xi Shi was one of the Four Great Beauties of Chinese history, and Lake Tai in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, is an ancient Classical image of natural splendor.
5 note: Each of these place names includes one of the Cardinal directions: Dongyang/East, Nanchang/South, Xi’an/West, Beijing/North, hence the poet’s mention of the North Star in the following line.
6 note: Zhai Yongming (1955—) is a female poet who began publishing in the 1980s, and currently runs a combination bar and literature/arts studio called White Night in Chengdu, Sichuan Provence.
2018
A Warm Poem
give pods to peas
give mud to barnyard grass
flying squirrels aren’t quite sparrows
they’re just squirrels that can fly
please give it a tree burrow to rest in
and a dried leaf
crouching in the mud
latecoming broom, please give it a moment of happiness
in the cold wind, the frightened back of a hand
does not conceal palms, yet still wants to grasp warm words

Tropical Rainforest
That giant tree is not the king of the rainforest
how dare it stand overlooking the myriad creatures
all beings are equal here, trees and vines vast and unrestrained
countless green hands freely grasping for sunshine and rain
branches and leaves intertwining tirelessly, stalks and branches growing to all directions
vines wrapped around trees and trees piled up to the sky like cloud castles
ferns exploding and spreading its supremacy, orchid grasses by the stream not humble either
a pair of dragonflies rest on the water under long leaves
mosquito larvae popping out from the water
even the most insignificant creature fights for its rightful space here
the Amazon River and the Congo River
and the East Shore of Madagascar
these plant encampments are life-saving medicinal shacks
in Xishuangbanna of Yunnan Provence
a place adored by both phoenix-tail bamboo and sunshine
the footsteps of wild elephants, the sound of distant thunder
I see two grand trees stand close to each other on the plateau
as if hugging, this seasoned couple has seen everything under the sun
brown bark laced in crevasses, scale-like chunks peeling off
whiskers droop down from the banyan’s branches
digging into the earth, growing thicker, from strands into forests
wrapped each by vines small or thick
Arms of the Knema trees secretly reaching out from behind
a thousand plants congested yet overjoyed
all sorts of rare plants and wild Chinese medicines
they reach out to the water in the sky and suck up the water of the earth
and themselves secrete endlessly
black-crested gibbons leap from vine to vine
the gravelly cry of toucans akin to neighing horses
a blue peacock spreads its splendors,
like a proud prince, wrapped in its cloak
