Important Changes to the Immigration Rules for Students who have changed their course of study
Please be aware that the Immigration Rules changed on 6th April 2016 and will affect you in the future if you change your course of study at the University. You are not affected by these changes at the moment because our records show that you have not changed your course, however you should be aware of these changes in case this does affect you in the future.
Who is affected?
The new changes affect you if you:
· Change your course of study AND;
· Do not successfully complete the original course your CAS was assigned for AND;
· Cannot complete your new course with your current visa and need more time in the UK.
What is a course change?
These changes affect any students in the following situations:
· Any students who has changed their course subject
· Any bachelors degree students who change to an enhanced undergraduate masters degree – for example if you change from BEng to MEng
· Any students who add a placement year or a year abroad to their course – for example if you are a BEng or MEng student and then add an industrial placement year to your course after you start it.
· Any students who transfer from an MPhil to a PhD level course
What is the new rule?
Your Tier 4 visa is only valid for the particular course that you originally applied to come to the UK for. If you change your course you will need to apply for a new visa for your new course. However you can no longer apply for a Tier 4 visa extension from the UK if you change course without having completed your original one. You can only apply for a new Tier 4 visa from overseas.
How and when to apply?
We advise that if you are thinking about changing your course in the future, for example going from BEng to MEng or adding a placement year to your studies, you should contact your academic School or us (the Student Immigration Team) before you confirm the course change. It may mean that you need to return home to apply for a new visa. If possible you should aim to do this during one of the vacation periods so that this will not disrupt your current studies.
