reference是否一定要tutor写啊?

:polite:

from my expierence, i put my course director as my academic referee and he's only be contacted after i got the job offer though email. But you better choose someone who's willing to write a decent reference for you and someone perhaps is more helpful on students, etc.

问一下,我本科是在苏格兰读的finance,9月要读master了,准备去city london读精算或者investment,相对于毕业后的找工作和工作待遇,哪个课程更好些呢? :cn09:

Both areas are good and both are very maths-orientated. But if you have a ‘finance’ background for 3yrs you should be able to do both.

As from job perspectives, both areas are very competitive and well paid if you can get a job in the City. As far as i know, if you get a job as an investment banker(except operation department) the starting salary is around 35-40K plus joining bonus about 3-5K but you have to work long hours, for example, if you’re in M&A , Capital Market. As on the other hand perhaps Actuaries is a bit laid back, you can try the other career path like the Big4s and Insurance and risk management companies.

没错,投行和精算的工资是都很高,前提是要找得到. 想问一下,一般找到类似工作的朋友,找到的是training programme还是直接工作的? 有谁能说说体会吗? :cn09:
谢谢

I had an IB interview long time ago―back in November. So as far as I can remember i had one test and interview on one day.(bear in mind different banks/divisions have different ways to assess your skills

The test were paper based and it’s about venture capital project valuation. Don’t worry, it sounds difficult but you have time to practice I think 2 examples before the tests and the time to ask the HR questions. More in detail: you have risk and return and the project specific rules in order to choose between ‘take’, ‘reject’ or ‘wait and see’. You have simple diagrams, balance sheets, profit&loss account, do some simple calculations….etc in order to choose the appreciate answer. Don’t worry if you can’t finish but work accurately.

I had 2 interviewers: one HR and one Manager from your applied division, for example fixed income sales and trading. Typical questions like how do you build relationships? When have you made a significant decision? And leadership and teamwork, I was asked a leadership question like: some people say leadership can be trained but others say someone is born to be a leader, what do you think?

And obviously a typical IB question: why IB? Why XXX? And Why fixed income etc…

If you go for trading interview, be prepared for both technical(current interest rates, how to price bond? what is CAPM? etc) and brain teaser questions like what’s the sqaure root of 13? How many red cars in the UK?Again, they want to see how you react under high pressure and how you think on your feet and he key is critical, logical thinking…the answer is not that important but your approach of giving the answer is!

Good luck!

有人知道Optiver这个公司么?是一个荷兰的derivate trading company

下周有一个numerical test在伦敦。知道的朋友说说这个公司怎么样啊?

:cn09:

may i ask a killer question?

how do u guys answer the question of “introduce urself?”

I would start by introducing what I am doing at the moment (your university, your particular course), what you have gained from it and how it links with your plans for the future. Then move on to your strengths, which distinguish yourself from the other candidates, for example, by briefly describing your roles and responsibilities at school or at your most recent jobs or your most significant achievement. Tell the interviewer why you’re the one with the skills that they are looking for.

I would say 1-2 minutes is decent in introducing yourself. If they’re interested in what you have just said they will digger more into it later. So you give yourself a good opening and leaving more spaces for latter on.

It maybe helpful as part of your interview preparation to ask your friends how they would describe you―sometimes you become so familiar with yourself that you find it quite strange to be asked to describe yourself in this way and the opinions of others an be good reminders and hopefully confidence boosters too!

No, it is quite good for getting a job, but depends on yourself of course.
